Behind every successful project is a strong consortium of dedicated partners. In this series, we take a closer look at each project partner, showcasing their expertise, experience, and contribution to our shared journey, starting with K1-MET, our coordinator.

Meet K1-MET

K1-MET is one of Europe’s leading metallurgical research centers, headquartered in Linz and Leoben, Austria.

For almost 25 years, K1-MET has been connecting industry, academia, and research to develop innovative solutions for the metallurgical sector. With a strong focus on resource efficiency, circular economy, decarbonization, and digitalization, K1-MET helps shape the future of sustainable metal production.

 K1-MET’s research is centered around three strategic areas:

Area 1: Metallurgical Process Efficiency & Circularity:

Advancing primary and secondary metallurgical processes, recycling technologies, and resource-efficient production.

Area 2: Decarbonization & Sector Coupling:

Developing innovative process and energy solutions that support the transition towards climate-neutral metallurgy.

Area 3: Simulation & Data Analytics:

Applying advanced process modelling, CFD, thermodynamic simulations, and data-driven methods to optimize metallurgical processes and support informed decision-making.

Within CircSmeltSteel, K1-MET plays a central role by coordinating the entire project while also contributing its scientific expertise across multiple work packages:

📌 WP1 – Project Management & Coordination

Ensuring efficient project execution, communication, and collaboration across the consortium.

📌 WP2 – Dissemination & Communication

Maximizing the visibility and impact of the project’s results.

📌 WP5 – Secondary Metallurgy, Casting & Demonstrator Alloy Processing

Contributing advanced process simulation and modelling to support the optimization of secondary metallurgical operations, casting processes, and demonstrator alloy production.

📌 WP9 – Exploitation of Results & Scenarios for Steel Product Applications

Supporting the transfer of project results towards industrial implementation.

📌 WP10 – Project Clustering Activities

Strengthening collaboration with complementary European projects to maximize knowledge exchange, create synergies, and accelerate innovation across the steel sector.

By combining project coordination with scientific excellence, K1-MET helps ensure that CircSmeltSteel not only delivers high-quality research but also creates practical solutions for a more circular, resource-efficient, and low-carbon European steel industry.
