As part of our ongoing partner spotlight series, we continue to introduce the organizations that make up our consortium. Each partner brings unique expertise and plays an important role in helping us achieve the project’s objectives
Meet Acciaierie d’Italia (ADI)
Transforming into European steelmaking requires solutions that work not only in laboratories, but also under real industrial conditions. Within CircSmeltSteel, this connection to industrial reality is provided by Acciaierie d’Italia (ADI), Italy’s largest steel group and an industrial partner with expertise spanning the entire steel production chain.
🔬 Research and innovation at industrial scale
Established in 2021 in Taranto, the ADI R&D Centre supports ADI in product and process innovation. Its facilities include 15 researchers, 9 laboratory specialists and more than 38 methodologies.
ADI’s R&D activities are organized around complementary areas including:
♻️ Sustainable Processes
Investigating renewable and alternative raw materials, emission reduction, by-product recovery and energy efficiency.
⚙️ Product & Process Development
Designing new steel grades and products, supporting industrial operations, improving rolling and finishing processes, and developing steels for current market requests.
Within CircSmeltSteel, ADI contributes across the complete route; from secondary feedstock preparation to final steel properties and industrial exploitation:
📌 WP4 – Low-Carbon Iron and Steelmaking with Different By-Product Feed Mixes
ADI supports the selection, shipment and characterization of steelmaking by-products, the definition of operating windows for ESF trials and the assessment of hot metal, crude steel and slag quality.
📌 WP5 – Adapted Secondary Metallurgy, Casting & Demonstrator Alloy Processing
ADI contributes its expertise to the assessment of refining and casting strategies for non BF-quality steel.
📌 WP6 – Multiscale Chemistry–Microstructure–Property Relationships
ADI leads Task 6.4 dedicated to chemistry-dependent phase-transformation kinetics. Through dilatometry, the team will generate phase transformation diagrams reproducing industrial thermal cycles.
📌 WP7 – Digital Downstream Processing for Optimal Steel Properties
ADI contributes to simulation models linking chemistry, microstructure and mechanical properties. Its thermomechanical rolling model will cover the route from furnace exit to coil winding.
📌 WP8 – Sustainability, Impact Assessment & Skills Development
ADI supports project’s KPIs, Life Cycle Assessment, Techno-Economic Assessment and Life Cycle Costing. It also contributes to the evaluation of re-skilling and occupational-safety requirements associated with low-carbon steelmaking.
📌 WP9 – Exploitation of Results & Steel Product Applications
ADI contributes to exploitation activities, application scenarios and industrial assessment of the project’s results.
